Rug Star Beijing Showroom

In early summer 2009, I received an e-mail from Hugh Zhang, a very emotional request on Rug Star for representing our brand in China and to open the first showroom in Beijing. We invited him to Berlin to see how we work and to spend a full week with us. Nine month later we opened our first Rug Star Beijing showroom at the Soho Beijing Residence. In Chinese tradition we included the park in front of the showroom for our opening event. May be it was very cold, but we all been more than happy about this amazing experience which we will continue. Thank you so much my dear Hugh Zhang and all the great people we've met in China.

Rug Star in Kuwait. Hello Middle East, here we come.

This was the bravest and biggest effort for a Rug Star exhibition I've ever seen in my life and I think it is all because of Haidar Hindi and his two very great brothers Yousef and Hassan. Please check the pictures of the Kuwait exhibition on the front page on our website, the opening event was spectacular and very successful. Amazing how Haidar transformed his showroom into a contemporary rug art gallery. Thank you so much to the whole Hindi family and Hello Middle East, here we come. We will continue in Doha and Beirut soon.

"Eden's Paradise", a work of Olaf Hajek presented at Oliv

"Eden's Paradise" is after "Tibetan Pop" the new and second aspects of the Rug Star Classic collection. Four of the designs are based on the work of Olaf Hajek, Germany´s number one illustrator and a friend since nearly 20 years. It took me a long time last year in Nepal to develop the right texture for his work, his colors are much milder, they look like fading away and the process of layering color on paperboard develops his unique surface, very difficult to translate into the Tibetan area rug. Oliver Mahne opened the most beautiful coffee shop in Berlin Mitte so we used the friendship we three have together and show since three month the work of Olaf Hajek in at "Oliv" by Oliver Mahne. And again the question: should they be on the floor or on the wall?

With "Children Heal Art Project" in Nepal

Oh what a trip, after weeks and weeks of preparations I went together with my good old friend Frank Etxaniz, founder and director of CHAP to Nepal. Since Rug Star translated some of the "CHAP" children drawings into Tibetan area rugs to support the CHAP structure in Portland/USA, the goal was to go together to Nepal and bring back some of this positive energy. Of course our two lovely traders from UK, Bonnie Sutton and Linny Moss couldn´t miss this. With cars full of paint and paper, we went to several hospitals and homes of the handicapped and started to do what we love most, to create with color, paper and emotions.

"Tibetan Pop" is the start of our "Rug Star Classic" collection, which we presented very successful first time at Domotex 2009

Beside the nomination (11 in 4 years) for "Best modern Collection", "Best modern Design" and "Best Innovation" at the Carpet Design Award we been very excited about the Domotex 2009. One reason was the launch of our Rug Star Classic collection "Tibetan Pop", a floral collection based on the patterns which we found in the saris of our female workers in the workshop in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu. The other reason was to show parts of the "Splash, or Johnny...." collection as ambassador of our modern collection "Love_Stories".

First Rug Star "Limited Edition" exhibition in Bergamo/Italy

Our first limited Edition "Splash, or Johnny I am going to Jackson..." was celebrated with an extraordinary opening night in the beautiful cloister di S. Marta in the heart of Bergamo/Italy at the 17th of October. The exhibition was organized with the heart blood of our trader Michele Cobelli and his brother Masimo Cobelli which we have to thanks so much for all the time and profession they invested into this exhibition. Our big goal was to show the moment of movement on the surface of the Tibetan area rug. Each of the 25 motives we shown in the show is limited by 6 only. Of course the title gives a hint, that this is a reverence to action painting and to the work of Jackson Pollock.

With ARTE to the Himalaya

For a documentation about the production of the Tibetan area rug I spent 2 weeks in the Himalaya with the cultural channel ARTE, with two beautiful people, the editor Gesine Enwaldt and the camera man Thomas Hirschmann. Most shoots where taken in our workshop in Bhaktapur. We also invited representatives of the non profit organizations RUG MARK and STEP, to discuss the social and political aspects of carpet production in Nepal. Many of us made many new friends, and at the end the film team and the 400 workers of our workshop joined together for a big pick nick in Nargacot, a hot spot in the east of the Kathmandu valley, with a gigantic view on the Himalaya, from Ganesh-Himal to Gauri-Shankar.
The documentation will be shown on TV in September.

RUG STAR at the International Centre of Design in Berlin

In May RUG STAR can be found at the International Centre of Design in Berlin with an exhibition and a presentation.
Exhibition: "ES FREUD" Story-telling patterns and protagonist design from Berlin.

"Anne Lise This" is a simple triple-plug rug that plays the central role in this story. It all began with a dyslectic note scribbled down while listening to a Madonna song. Ever since, she has been the analyst in the world of "Rainer Unsinn" and his friends, a group of adolescent grown-ups in childlike outfits.

Presentation: "Between Tibet, IKEA and Berlin"

For the row "future products," we tell the tale of a journey between Tibet, IKEA and Berlin, the individualisation of markets and globalisation, hand-spun wool and the internet, and what it is like to work at the IKEA creative department as a designer.

LIBRARY
a modular carpet system for a Swiss reading room

"GÄUMANN LÜDI VON DER ROPP," a Swiss group of architects, have added a beautiful calm and modern charm to an old canton library in Frauenfeld, Thurgau, with their modification. The team of architects has created many modern aspects by its conceptual and innovative use of soft furnishing. Its colours and surfaces reflect the scumble of certain woods. RUG STAR developed a modular carpet system for the reading room. The aim was to solve existing problems in the room acoustics and hide the cables leading to the individuals lecterns. These lecterns stand on large carpet islands that consist of 42 hand-knotted carpets. The cables to the lecterns follow the edges of the carpets without being visible.

April 2004

VORK
the first product launch at IKEA's

"Vork" is a modular carpet system, a design tool in which the customer is the co-creator. He can put together his own design in form of a carpet or a textile sculpture. The modules are hand-tafted carpets in sizes 70 cm x 105 cm. In combination, they meet all standard sizes, but can also be placed as pleased following the theme "freestyle your rug," or can catch the eye when hanging on the wall. If the same-design module offers a wealth of variance, the six modules opens a world of variety. It is expanded by the pattern structure. By a rectangular pattern in the background and a second organic pattern in the foreground, it is possible to rotate and adjust the carpets and always create the illusion, that they fit like pieces of a jigsaw.
